Lowpass - Highpass hard cuts with Ableton plugins?!?!

Post by Daemonix »

hello,

I have one question for Live users!

What do you use for HP-LP hard cuts? And if you see bad sound results?
EQ8 cant (from what I see) do hard cuts!?
EQ3 has something like 24-48db/oct but Im not sure about the quality?!
AutoFilter is close but not sure if its good to use it like that?!
Something else?

Im talking about HP-LP on production where the quality is top priority.

thnx

i imagine all are fine. some people round here only use Ableton's plugins so they must be alright.

What is it for? If you want as transparent a sound as possible, eg a sharp highpass to cut out all the rumble for mastering, there are more specialised options - linear phase filters and stuff geared up specifically towards mastering. But the Live EQ8 is pretty good for most applications, and when you're creating electronic music you can afford to be less careful with effect units that impart their own sound. If you want a sharper cutoff with EQ8 (or any LP/HP filter) you can just cascade two or more LPF (or HPF) poles at the same place; that's effectively all a higher-order filter does.

Not necessarily... depends what you mean by hard cut - you can chain as many LPFs together as you want and as long as they're not resonant then nor will be the combination.

Well, each EQ8 cut is 12db/oct, so string together two and you've got yourself 24.
