Pan Sonic

Mika Vainio, Ilpo Väisänen

Pan sonic (they were also called Panasonic before legal issues took away letter A) are two guys from Finland, Mika Vainio and Ilpo Vaisanen, who started out with long-term, low-frequency, high-decibel experiments and organizing rave partys where "hardly anything happens ever" (a.k.a. Finland). The minimalistic music of Pan Sonic is composed "from a forbidding array of pure tones, sinewaves, pulses, electronic squelches and ultrasonic waveforms," and a humorous attitude, "skilfully arranged into an accessible rhythmic package" mainly taken from the bowels of custom-built sinewave generators. Given songs titled "Kurnutus" or "Rutina" (that is "Croaking" and "Crackle"), the environmental buzz, crackles and hums emanating from the speakers are harldy a surprise. Despite suggesting a harmless set of natural (sounding) frequencies, Pan Sonic have built up a reputation for fearsome live volume levels and atonal indulgence.

GREAT stuff!!!

minimal enough? :P

get your hands (ears) on Pan Sonic - Alku
(pretty hard to get any more minimal than this I think, maybe John Cage's 4'33" can compete :))

Mika Vainio solo projects got me into more serious electronic music and minimalism, those releases on Sähkö records are minimal in word's actual meaning :)

Did they get a lawsuit from Panasonic, since they changed the name?
I had the 4x10" in the blue box, some months ago.

Pan Sonic is the ultimate party smasher IMHO, and possibly the best thing I've heard on stage.
Great music, clever one, rocking like hell.
Years ago the Wire readers voted them "best rock band" and, indeed, they are. Nothing like that on the markt, go try to find their live with Merzbow, it'll melt yr brain.

best rock band...?
there's a experimental rock group called "pan america", you mean them?
or is it ironic to call them rock band?
it'll piss me off anyway to see pan sonic with guitar on the stage with acoustic instruments.....
