you should be able to get 300 pressed (with good mastering) for around 900ish euro, so you should be able to break even if you sell all 300 units, but nope. No earnings here.

This is true to a point. With the IRS *you have* to be trying to make a profit which is hard today releasing vinyl. So getting a business liscense just to release wax if it isn't producing profit will not be a viable business.john clees wrote: also, it's in your best interest to start a company. here in the U.S. I think you can show a loss on your taxes for 3 years before anything is even questioned. I originally did a D.B.A. - Doing Business As... $45 registration at the county for like 7 years or something.
save your receipts as write offs, throw a party, give away free stuff, have fun and create a buzz...
best wishes..
The only way around this is if you are a sole propieter or LLC that makes money doing business with something else. So if you make money in the Art and Design field you can have a vinyl label and treat the loss as a write off. It could be viewed as promotion part of your art business.

Before you worry about all that stuff see if any distributors are interested in your music.Cheaper wrote:I understand, but i don't use non cleared samples so it's ok1. you use not cleared-samples, or stuff you dont have the copyright for.
2. you dont pay taxes for the earnings you make.
Given that a 300 units pressing with good mastering is around 1000 euros, and that most distributors will by 3/3,5 euros max a piece, can we really talk about earnings ?
I was thinking about founding an association. Here in France it's extremely flexible and it gives you a moral person and VAT number
If not you're dead in the water. Don't try self distribution. Record shops and online stores won't be interested. My .02

Yes they will eventually. If they like the music they'll sell it. But i agree, this isn't the way to go.Record shops and online stores won't be interested
Look at all the bootlegs you find in shops, they're not from any distributor

I got a very cold reception from most shops in NYC. This is from not even looking at the record. Maybe it's better in Europe.Cheaper wrote:Yes they will eventually. If they like the music they'll sell it. But i agree, this isn't the way to go.Record shops and online stores won't be interested
