the things you would pick up from an engineer are they different to what you learn online. going to a studio will teach you how to mix and polish tracks a bit, where as the internet will probably teach you stuff like how to make drums like artist X using program Y

Of course engineering and mixing is an important part of the production process, but all the eqing and compressing in the world won't turn a track without soul or groove into something people can relate to.

its funny if you read back this thread, its gone off at tangents with people seemingly arguing points, when in actuality we're all agreeing that its the tunes that are the important factor not the engineering.

the sounds, textures, drums, chords that are used. put a lot of swing on the drums with a 909 hi hats and most people would straight away say "thats a jacking/chicago house beat"

another example. say your in a band. you know that your kit consists of guitars, drums, mics etc. now bands whether they make indie or metal or whatever sub genre, they all use pretty much the same kit. but its the way that the artists manipulate the instruments that defines the sound they make
