I disagree with the last statement. I think the ultrakurt on minibar is a little better than the the foundsound release especially the Cheese Pills track, but they are both killer records. I'm surprised nobody on MNML has mentioned a word besides Deccard about the new label and release from Cabanne and Gluck, minibar label. That label looks very promising so far so very good with
Le Crick De Bamako.

Ultrakurt
En Short EP
[Foundsound, 2005]

Philly’s Foundsound label is quickly making a name for itself in the world of cut-up electronics. For their fourth release, the French duo Ultrakurt has taken time out from their new label minibar to bestow some science on us with En Short. Composed of three tracks, the EP is sort of a how-to primer for those of us who find Akufen a tad too messy. The main rhythmic basis for “Carnadada” is a breathy, unintelligible male voice that oftentimes seems to want to go further with his dialogue, while “Yves Baustin” uses that same basis for a more bass-driven enterprise that trades subtlety for a hip-shaking good time. Fusiphorm turns up for a remix of the latter, adding a dash of melody to the whole thing, flipping the coin on a group far more concerned with the body than the mind.

Ultrakurt's En Short is the latest in an ongoing stream of impressive 12-inch releases from foundsound, with this outing produced by French duo Jean-Guillaume Cabanne (aka Cabanne and one-half of Copacabannark alongside Ark) and David GlN|ck (aka GlN|ck and Spasm) who have played together intermittently since 1990.

Of the EP's three pieces (one a Fusiphorm mix), the infectiously playful “Carnadada” shines brightest. Over the course of its slow-burning nine minutes, Perlonesque percolations skip and burble while a captivating array of syllabic voice snippets chatters over top. Less fragmented voice samples (radio transmissions and commercial announcements) surface amidst incessantly shimmying rhythms and a persistent bass gurgle in “Yves Baustin” while foundsound co-founder Fusiphorm (aka cyhl) gives the song a slithering “Wrong Mix” club workout teeming with percussive clanks and whirrs; a plummeting voice break coolly splits the song in two before initiating the blissfully grooving second half. Fusiphorm's contribution is not only strong in itself but dramatically broadens the EP's contrast.

Probably the strongest release so far from Found Sound. Ultrakurt seems totally at home with stripped-down, minimal grooves like this and he imbues it with such an irresistable groove that it's impossible not to be moved by it. Stirling stuff. The flip has another killer little Tech track plus, the piece de resistance, the Fusiphorm remix... a staggeringly advanced track that rips out the sound and replaces it with so much space and depth but acres of dancefloor appeal. Wickedly good indeed.

Ultrakurt are Parisian duo Cabanne and Gluck. Cabanne has previously released for Traum, Force Inc, Perlon, Circus Company, Karat and 7th City and the pair are largely responsible for setting up the Logistic affiliated Telegraph label.

This new record for Philadelphia's Foundsound Records feautures two new tracks and a remix from label boss Fusiphorm aka Cyhl. They're all based around tight minimal grooves with punctuation coming from various clanks, whirrs, rumbles and vocal snips, all of which are placed to perfection to extract the greatest amount of funk. The lead track features on the upcoming Richie Hawtin mix DE9: Transition.
