You can indeed use both in combination with Ableton (midi).
Regarding the sound quality of the Electribe gear, I think it also depends how you use it.
I don't own any Electribe gear myself, but I know people who do.
They however say that the Electribes are fine for small background sounds, but not for main drums.
It also depends what kind of music you make...

i've got the older er-i and the newer EA1 MKII and for their price, i quite like them.
The er-1 is definatly plasticy in construction as opposed to the newer editions. The MKII feels a hell of a lot more solid, but again don't expect toooo much just based on their prices.
In terms of sounds, i'm pretty happy with both. Yeah, you'll need to process them to really pull out something fantastic, but that's the real world.
For someone who doesn't like software, these are perfect for me.
I think alot of people just shy away from the groovebox thing, but i think they
're great for just brainstorming and getting something down quickly.
So no complaints.
