Archipel CD 002 "Between Heartbeats" by Jesse Somfay
Minimal, melodic, progressive, techno or electronica, Jesse Somfay's first full length raises many questions about his musical identity. In the spirit of the label, this 73 minute journey plunges the listener into a world of serenity and emotions. Sustained by long hypnotic melodies, the songs slowly flow by, each one like a richly painted tableau.
Armed with his guitar and a multitude of effects, Somfay carries the listener like a mother carries a child in her womb, demonstrating a rare maturity for such a young composer. Candid and inspired, the songs leave a lasting impression on the listener, the feelings provoked lingering for the rest of the day. A multitude of influences can be heard and felt, sometimes evoking Depeche Mode, other times an up to date and sophisticated take on New Age.
His approach is to tame the listener with repetitive tracks that follow a simple structure yet manage to avoid clichés. Somfay, whose music has also appeared on Traum Schallplatten, takes the risk of digging deep within himself and exposing his personal universe of sweet, soft techno.
