First time analog synthetizer

Post by janluis1 »

A friend of mine suggested me this Synthesizer:

http://www.ebay.it/itm/Roland-SH-201-An ... 9c3&_uhb=1

As is not usually expensive and can be used as a midi keyboard I thought could be a good purchase for a first hardware equipment buy. As I am very interested by this item and since the auction starts from 0 I would like to have some advice: Is safe buying synthesizers off ebay!? I never bought expensive stuff and I would like to have a pleasant experience in case I decide to buy right now.

i've purchased many synths of ebay in america. Usually works out in your favor as a buyer. There are lots of protections in place to make sure you don't get ripped off.

As a seller it can be the other way around, ebay fees, customer satisfaction, etc.

This synth isn't exactly analog. its modeled but i'm sure it sounds alright and could be fun to get hands on control. personally I'd rather get the analogue sound but its much more expensive.

edit: if you do insist on getting a modeled synth... i'd strongly look at the AIRA Roland System-1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVWZ8A4TrRU. the modelling is going to be much better than the SH

I recommend getting the Arturia Microbrute. 'Simple' real analogue monophonic synth that has a very powerful oscillator section and a very phat sounding filter. There's also a mod matrix for some very simple patching (routing the envelope/LFO to a sine wave metalizer, PWM, ultrasaw amount and sub oscillator modulation). I like the envelope section too, good for making short and snappy sounds.

Or take a look at the Korg Volca range. They seem pretty fun, though I have never used one.
