cassettes can sound REALLY good. much easier medium than reel to reel as well.

for pre master recordings i would go at least for an 15 ips unit.
something like the revox a77 and/or b77 will be really nice for these kinda stuff...

for more experimental use i would say try to get a tascam 424 or something like that.
really lo-fi, pitch control, eq and even aux channels.

uh-e satin is out today. sounds pretty bad ass. can be used as tape delay too... (*) (*) (*)

Example of Uh-e Satin... was good with all the tape noise... sounds pretty rad.

all the bad noise of tape with none of the vibe, and more expensive than what you would pay for a killer cassette deck!

I've got a Tascam 122 Mk2 for cheaper than this, it's in my rack to be taken out live. So good sounding.

Tascams are the sh!t that blue one is really good, I think that is the 242 or 414 it can record at high speeds
