Well you need to use an software editor with matrix-1000
and with 6r you don´t need that.
To me that´s quite easy reason to choose because i hate software editors so much

or you can get the access matrix programmer for it !
before access made the viri synths,
they made midi controllers for synths like the matrix 1000 and an early waldorf model (I think it was the microwave, but I'm not sure).
I have a matrix 1000 and an access controller for years.
In fact, it was the first analog synth I ever bought (long long time ago).
back then I bought it cause I figured you had tons of analog sounds for very little money.
And with the programmer, you can touch anything except the modulation matrix.
You can get a software editor if you want to change the modulation matrix as well,
but personally, I find you never need to touch the thing (except for what I can do with my controller, but even without a controller the matrix is tons of fun and is loaded with nice warm oberheim sounds)
There's so many presets on the damn thing you'll be happy with just adding external FX.
You can perfectly replace the access programmer with something like a behringer BCR2000 (which I have and don't like, it's in my attic somewhere, I don't even bother to sell it) or a mackie C4 programmer (which I have but is for sale, guess I don't like it enough) if you load the right presets in it.
The one for the BCR2000 you can find on the net for free I think.
The one for the mackie C4 is for sale on some guy's site. (in fact the guy now rewrote all his presets so you can now also load them into an iPad as well. He made presets for controllers for a lot of synths like (K5000,...))
Back when I bought the matrix 1000, it was known to be a very stable and cheap analog,
and I can confirm from owning one for almost 10 years that that is completely true,
but I'm not sure how expensive they've become nowadays.
