Royalties hike for Berlin clubs

Post by agodi »

Some of you may be aware of this, but it seems many of Berlin's clubs are under threat at the moment as GEMA plan to introduce huge royalty surcharges that could potentially drive a lot of clubs out of business. Check out this article from the guardian for further details

Not only Berlin, all of Germany.
It is pretty crazy what GEMA is doing here.

Its ridiculous! Most of the music being played in these clubs has nothing to do with the artists that GEMA represents. They just seem to be ruthless copyright trolls, collecting as much money as possible from any source available. They've already been successful against youtube; demanding a percentage of the advertising revenue on content owned by them, even if its music playing in the background of a video. Hopefully those opposed to this royalties hike will manage to form some sort of a deal or excemption but for the moment at least the outlook isn't great.
What worries me further is that other countries have their own versions of GEMA, so lets hope they don't start getting ideas from this

don't you think it's a sign that things need to approach the underground again, where this kind of thing can't be regulated?

how do you want to go underground with a big scene like berlin?

they close already left and right clubs and build hotels instead, there is no space for illegal underground partys. maybe if only 50 people attend but thats it.
