Although dedicated software certainly exists, you could take your 24bit sample and drop the volume to half, then boost it up again. Some audio programs maintain even higher sample rates internally, just to allow the aforementioned type of operation without losing quality, so exporting after lowering...

tape is like that :-) you are using a new tape, right, and not some random 80s cassette with wham and ub40 on side b? you might try eqing away a lot of the low end, or just lowering the kick and bass in the mix to suit the tape results. Vintage (or just older) gear is quite often built with components of much higher tolerances. Think of it like this, if you design a resistor or capacitor that can tolerate a huge amount of overload, then you've designed it too well. They are often bulkier and heavier and so more expensive to produce...
