A grounding issue is most commonly described as a buzzing, and the OP is talking about hiss and static, so I would think pretty hard about cutting wires and looking into ground lifts. the reason people use modulars is that they like the patching, the physical interface, the gear etc. not primarily cos they want to make killer tunes with it. discuss.
