Always best to just do it how you think it should be done and keep messing around. Odds are you'll eventually come up with something you'll enjoy and it'l be your own.

What I'd done before, is first you take off the attack of an 808 kick. Then you place it with the kick or where-ever you want for the desired sound or groove that you'd like.
