Call me daft but I can't trick myself into liking this stuff anymore.
Up intill lastnight, I went on a techno boycott, I spent about 2 weeks listening to a lot of the brian blade fellowship, bobby byrd, A LOT of swans, lisa gerrerd, stax records, sonic youth, steve jordan... whatever. But nothing to do with electronic dance music.
I was so happy, not just with music, but my mood was glowing, and my friends said that i've been a lot more warm and friendly.
last night I put on axel bomans- jungle jesus, the last record I bought before going on my techno fast. I almost immediately felt my mood stoop real low. I tried that new eric johnson record after that, and then I gave up.
I hate this sh!t, I really do. I'll probably still listen to like Daniel bell and maybe some mark ashken, iz & diz or whatever. But for the most part, im done for a long while.
I am here by officially dropping ableton live and my 909 for my gretsch and drumkit.
extended leave

I'm done with it to man! I'm going back to house, including Jorge Savoretti, Pedro, Digitaline, Mikael Stavostrand and Ion Ludwig and that's it for me. To many cluttering of bad tracks, to much Hipness and no more feeling for the music any more. Everybody is minimal nowadays, but the creativity in the music itself is long freaking gone! It's a hype!
Bonkers! |

strange topic for a "mnml" forum isn't it?
i mean, if i grow tired of something, i just quit it
but to announce it to a whole crowd who actually likes it? |

It's not that strange really. I guess one just wants to see if anyone else feels the same way too.
Anyway about the content of the topic. I think its important not to force on oneself something. If you dont like something then dont listen/mix/produce/whatever that style. |

if you had to trick yourself into liking something in the first place maybe it wasnt meant to be.
i dont really think the word minimal has meant anything for about 5years, but just take a break for a while, you should be listening to different stuff anyway, only one genre is a quick way of getting depressed, if you want to be happy you need a bit of unpredictability in your life, so branch out etc. |

You will be back soon. I guess we all had that short break when everything but miminal techno sounded nice. After a few days/weeks/months? you randomly play a dope track and realise that "fck me, this is some good sh!t"
Been recently listening to Archive, Muse, some trip-hopish stuff like DJ Shadow and Portishead + even James Brown and Ray Chalres and also felt amazing with it. It is Wighnomy Brothers (@SpringEight) grooving on my headphones now though. _________________

Ca nous fait une belle jambe!
Sometimes I have periods when I don't listen to 4/4 music during a week or more, but my love for this scene does not decrease.
Perhaps this music was not for you and you just followed the hype? _________________ The one who sees that there's Good in every criminal, and Bad in every innocent, understands forgiveness, understands everything. |

In 2005 I fell in love with this kind of music, because of the fact the music was so unpredictable and refreshing. For me that's gone now. The producers I mentioned above really have developed their own unique style. A style that I love and want to follow even more, because I want to see how it's gonna progress. A lot of other producers can't get my attention anymore, for a long time now. So it's time for something new. New music with feeling. Everybody makes transitions in music/life. For me that time has come. No biggie! |

Digitaline, Ion Ludwig, Savoretti... I agree, they are very talented and have developed their own distinctivity. Their sounds are unique. But I don't give a fck to the scene, because I'm still discovering refreshing things.
The last new artist I really like is Ahmet Sisman for example. Something new! It does not sound "minimal". But nowadays it's a fact, we call "minimal" every 4/4 music which sounds modern and detailed.
I still think that innovativ sounds come from this scene, that's why I won't stop listening to it for the moment. _________________ The one who sees that there's Good in every criminal, and Bad in every innocent, understands forgiveness, understands everything. |

This is exactly the reason why when all the ‘minimal’ hype first started; I always argued that it’s all just House & Techno anyway. It just so happened that the particular new wave ‘minimalist’ strand of House & Techno was going through a real innovative period at the time (04/05), coupled with the fact that the harder loopy strand of Techno had got stuck in a rut. But now that strand has become tired, people who labelled themselves ‘minimal’ have pretty much shot themselves in the foot.
There is still a need for minimal approaches to the music in my box as it’s always useful to take it down to and build back up in real long sets or even to get real trippy (Zimmerman etc springs to mind).
When all this the current hipsters who label themselves now as Deep House DJ’s, they will also shoot them selves in the foot when that strand becomes tired. The wiser people who realise and appreciate the wider spectrum of House & Techno and its external influences will always last the duration. _________________ http://bambambcn.blogspot.com |

When minimal first started it was a rough uncut diamond with many rough sides and surprises (techno).. Now six years in the making, minimal has become a brilliant round cut diamond. Sounds are calculated, clean and flawless (progressive).
I was never really into progressive or reverb laden peaks.. |

I was never into mnml. But I like this forum because there are so many people interested in music. And there are, have been, and will be minimal tracks I like... for their sound and rhythm experiments, for their pumping bass, for their psychedelic melodies, or for whatever I will need in some moment in time...
I can understand some disappointment if you gave your heart to this genre... I am at a point where I give my heart to .. well ... music. Quite a safe attitude. |
